Great Day Trips.
Silver Fern Accommodation and Spa is situated in Rotorua, which is a central location point for many day trip options. We have summarised a number of these below, however there are many more fantastic options available.
MOUNT MAUNGANUI.
Voted one of New Zealand’s most popular beaches, people visit ‘The Mount’ to swim, surf, and soak up the sun. There are beautiful walks in which you can walk around the base of the mountain, or for the more adventurous walk to the top. Take in stunning views and scenery on both walk options, plus there are fantastic cafes and eateries to satisfy your hunger (or thirst) once you are finished.
Location: 1 hour drive time from Rotorua.

Handy tip: Mount Maunganui is 10 minutes from Tauranga where there is excellent shopping.

HOBBITON.
Whether you have seen Lord of The Rings or not, Hobbiton is a spectacular place for the imagination. Rolling farmland hills appear to have small hobbit windows and doors, and the Mill and Green Dragon Inn are spectacular sights to see.
Location: 1 hour drive time from Rotorua; pick ups are available.

Handy tip: It is possible to visit Hobbiton and Waitomo in the same day.
HUKA FALLS.
Located just North of Taupo the Huka Falls is the most visited natural attraction in New Zealand, with 220,000 litres of water gushing over the falls every second. For the brave there are jet boat rides available, where you can get right amongst it.
Location: 1 hour drive time from Rotorua; with self drive or day trip options available.

Handy Tip; Between Rotorua and Taupo you will pass Waimangu, Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland, Waikite Thermal Pools and Orakei Korako, so why not choose one to stop at to break up the journey.
TONGARIRO CROSSING.
Rated as the best one day trek in New Zealand, this 19.4km hike takes you past stunning crater lakes and volcanic features. A reasonable level of fitness is required as the walk covers various terrain and altitude, the weather can also be unpredictable. The trek begins and ends in different places, so arranging a pick up at the end of the trek is crucial.

Location: 2 hours drive South of Rotorua, self drive or day trips are available.
Handy tip: good tramping gear is required, the crossing can be closed in winter due to snow.
WAITOMO CAVES.
See stunning glow worms while walking through an underground tunnel network, or take it one step further by cruising through the tunnels in a boat, or black water rafting down the underground streams in a tyre tube. For the more extreme there are abseiling options also available.

Handy tip: consider visiting Hobbiton while in the Mighty Waikato
TARAWERA TRAIL.
This newly opened trail lets you walk from the Landing Cafe at Lake Tarawera around the back of the lake, across culturally sensitive sites to arrive at Hot Water beach. This freshwater beach on the edge of the lake has hot water coming up through the sand, making a perfect place for a hot swim or to pitch a tent for the night.

Location: the start of the walk is a 30 minute drive from Rotorua at The Landing Cafe
Handy tip: you can catch a water taxi back to save having to do the return walk
